I managed to become Arena Champion killing Al-Sahir (and in other playthrough with the same character also the Widowmaker), kill Belgutai, defend Harran's pass from the Ordu horde, destroying Antidas with his guards, discover and deliver the ancient flying chariot to Ganezzar (or Maadoran) etc. My drifter who (just before talking to dictator Paullus ) was able to achieve end game Burn It ending, with following skills and attributes: I would say that the beauty of the Age of Decadence is the fact, that even balanced-hybrid characters can become deadly killing machines and Arena Champions, as well as great lore experts, crafters etc. That part - the main quest - is also doable without fighting, of course. You can probably beat the game without joining anyone at all, just by concentrating on what lord Antidas asks of you (and without swearing him fealty, which wouldn't change anything anyway). )Īnd, of course, any faction questline is only one side of the game's storyline. And that won't necessary be the end of it. You can start with a loremaster, join boatmen of Styx, then betray them to Imperial Guard, wait a bit for the right opportunity and switch over to being a praetor for lord Gaelius. Praetor is the only background that has a unique questline tied to him/her in Teron, which isn't available for any other character.Īlso, there are plenty opportunities for betrayal and switching sides. Others don't, and most of the time their influence on your game ends after the first mini-quest (the one that gives an achievement), except a few minor exceptions (loremaster has an extra conversation in Teron, grifter has a funny twist to one encounter in Ganezzar). Just to make it clear: the only connection between backgrounds and factions is that some backgrounds start already joined with a faction. Mercenary start quickly suggests joining Imperial Guard, but does not force you to go down that path (there are other available options).

Drifter is a literal nobody who can become anybody. Same for grifter - starting with one only gives you a little unique connection to the game world, but doesn't force you into anything. Loremaster doesn't have an explicit "background questline" beyond the common main quest and any exploration he does of his own volition. Thieves seem good for a while, but in Ganezzar some kills are required if I remember it right. Praetors and merchants can definitely finish their faction questlines without killing. There are also a LOT of areas with items that you can interact with to get bonus points, and I'm having trouble finding a useful guide so I might do a writeup tommorow.ĮDIT: Keep in mind, you might have spent more SP than me, so we could still be relatively close. (You might have guessed, I'm terrible with names) I know for one that Feng, the loremaster he hires you to kill, the guy outside the palace who gives you quests, the Lord of the first town, the bandit camp leader, and your guild friends (if you're merchant, thief, or assassin) can give you points just by talking to them. Guess I could have missed some trading here and there, but the difference is still pretty huge.ħ Charisma is very important, as is asking everyone's life stories. I've just finished a Talker Praetor before Maadoran, and I have far less SP (10 int as well).

Originally posted by Arbiter:For merchant, how about everything? I'm just the first response them, hopefully some vets will show themselves in later on. I've only really seen the opening area.Īlchemy is more so for salves, poisons, and bombs, isn't it? Doesn't seem very useful for a non-combat char, but what do I know. I found enough trade from the man in back of merchant house (+1) and book Linos gives you after finishing merchant quest was enough, but eh. Your praetor setup would be something I'd run for a merchant, skill wise, but I'm just a noob. Just one or the other, and I'm leaning towards dex beacuse of the potential to dabble into stealth (I had 96 points left over, so I could dabble in anything, really). I also didn't want points going to waste in combat tree, but again, some dex or con(?) may be good. Intelligence can also go lower, but I like the extra SP.

Investing more in dex would probably be a good idea for some checks later on and perception/charisma could be dropped by 1/2 points. I managed to get that after the demo area. According to wiki, merchant CAN complete game without killing.
